Four of Japan’s Leading Female Acts Unite for a Night of Empowerment at Women In Music - EQUAL STAGE

As the spotlight of MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026 shone across Tokyo, one of the award week's most anticipated events took place on Tuesday, June 9: MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN WEEK SPECIAL LIVE Billboard JAPAN | Spotify present Women In Music - EQUAL STAGE at SGC Hall Ariake.

The one-night-only event celebrated the voices shaping the future of music while championing gender equity across the industry. Bringing together Billboard JAPAN Women In Music and Spotify EQUAL—two initiatives dedicated to amplifying and supporting women in music—the stage highlighted the power of representation, creativity and community.

The evening featured standout performances from four artists redefining Japan's contemporary music landscape: Atarashii Gakko!, Awich, Hitsujibungaku and LANA. Hosted by mikako of Nagie Lane and announcer Ryo Nagoshi, the event combined live performances with exclusive artist interviews and EQUAL brand films, creating a dynamic showcase of talent, storytelling and empowerment.

Atarashii Gakko!

As soon as hosts mikako and Ryo Nagoshi welcomed Atarashii Gakko! to the stage, the group's set began in their signature fashion — with the sound of a school bell ringing through the venue. “Women In Music! We are Atarashii Gakko!” shouted SUZUKA before launching into “Go Wild,” whose tribal rhythms immediately had the audience on its feet.

The group also performed their latest single, “Chanka Chanka,” inspired by traditional Japanese festival music, with SUZUKA leading spirited call-and-response chants throughout the hall. Momentum only grew as they moved into “Otona Blue.” During the song’s chorus, the audience eagerly joined in doing the song’s  signature neck-swaying dance.

After “Arigato,” which saw the members playfully using brooms as makeshift guitars, Atarashii Gakko! delivered the empowering “Otome no Bigaku” and “Fly High,” songs that resonated strongly with the event’s celebration of women in music. Addressing the crowd, SUZUKA remarked, “It’s quite rare to see an event featuring four female acts like this. I hope you can experience the energy of women with all five of your senses.”

She then taught the audience a spirited “saikō!” (“the best!”) call-and-response before the group launched into “Tokyo Calling,” while expressing their respect for fellow performers Awich, Hitsujibungaku, and LANA. Closing the set, SUZUKA declared, “We’ll continue our adventures around the world in our own way,” before Atarashii Gakko! brought their performance to a triumphant conclusion with “One Heart.”

Hitsujibungaku

Hitsujibungaku took the stage next, opening their set with “OOPARTS.” Driven by an energetic drum performance, the song immediately elevated the atmosphere inside the venue. Midway through the performance, vocalist/guitarist Moeka Shiotsuka and bassist Yurika Kawanishi stepped toward the front of the stage while continuing to play, drawing even closer to the audience.

After powering through the tightly wound “doll,” the band moved into “Koe,” which began with Shiotsuka’s gritty guitar strumming. As the song reached its chorus, the arrangement seemed to open up all at once, with the dreamy soundscape beautifully complemented by the harmonies of Shiotsuka and Kawanishi.

The trio then performed “more than words,” the ending theme for the Shibuya Incident arc of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2. The song became a major hit both in Japan and overseas, accumulating more than 200 million streams. Audience members quickly responded with synchronized handclaps before raising their arms during the soaring chorus.

“Thank you for being here today,” Shiotsuka told the crowd. “This is our last song. We’re Hitsujibungaku.” The band then launched into “Dogs,” their latest single and the theme song for the Netflix drama series Sins of Kujo. Anchored by piercing distortion guitars and the band's unmistakable sense of dynamics, the performance served as a powerful reminder of why Hitsujibungaku are regarded as one of Japan’s leading alternative rock acts.

Between performances, hosts mikako and Ryo Nagoshi returned to the stage for brief discussions and introduced pre-recorded interview segments featuring the artists. ATARASHII GAKKO! reflected on the group's philosophy, explaining that there is a difference between simply “laying everything bare” and “standing out,” emphasizing their desire to find joy while pushing boundaries rather than breaking rules. Hitsujibungaku spoke about their hopes of aging gracefully, seeing more women-led bands emerge and continuing to create music as artists admired for their talent beyond gender.

The hosts also highlighted remarks from Billboard JAPAN’s Women In Music interviews, including LANA’s reflection that she has “no regrets” about her life so far, and Awich’s belief that “the most important part of my life’s work is maintaining a dialogue with myself.”

LANA

One of Japan’s fastest-rising stars, LANA made her entrance with a striking a cappella opening. The youngest hip-hop artist to headline a solo concert at Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan and launch a nationwide arena tour, she commanded the stage from the moment she appeared.

Joined by dancers dressed in colorful costumes, she moved effortlessly across the stage before launching into one of her signature hits, “No.5.” The track began with the familiar question, “What is LANA’s favorite perfume?” As LANA and her dancers moved their arms in unison, much of the audience quickly followed along.

As the intro to “MY LIFE” filled the venue, she led a lively call-and-response before rallying the crowd: “Looking good! Are you all warmed up now? Give me all of that energy! How many of you can get even louder?” Following “it’s okay,” LANA surprised the audience with a cover of Ayumi Nakamura’s classic “Tsubasa no Oreta Angel” (“Broken-Winged Angel”), a song she shared was introduced to her by her mother after experiencing heartbreak as a teenager. Her powerful vocals captivated the crowd and showcased a different side of her artistry.

She then transformed the venue into a vibrant club with her disco-tinged new song “Drama Queen” before introducing “Like a Flower” with the message, “Let’s live gracefully, like flowers blooming beautifully.” Closing the set with “L7 Blues,” a track capturing the unstoppable momentum of her current rise, LANA delivered the line, “I can’t stop—and I have no intention of stopping,” before leaving the stage confidently beneath LED screens displaying the words “STREET PRINCESS.”

Bringing the evening to a powerful close was Awich. Opening with “Remember,” she immediately set the tone for the final set of the night, urging the audience to give it everything they had left before leading a venue-wide jump during the chorus. From the very first song, she commanded the stage with her attention-demanding presence.

The momentum continued through “Dore ni Shiyou Kana,” whose themes felt especially fitting for an event celebrating women in music, and “RASEN in OKINAWA,” a track rooted in the spirit of her hometown. Elevated by a dynamic live band arrangement, the performance carried a sense of both pride and power.

Addressing the crowd, Awich reflected on the significance of the event. “Since this is Women In Music, I put together a setlist for women,” she said. “But I see a lot of men here too. You must be here supporting the women in your lives. This is the last set of the night, so I want you to give me all your energy—and I’ll do the same.”

She then launched into the fierce “Bad Bitch Bigaku,” before surprising the audience by bringing LANA to the stage. The appearance of the two artists together—one of Japan’s most influential hip-hop figures alongside one of its fastest-rising stars—sparked one of the loudest reactions of the night.

AwichとLANA。

Awich later opened up about her own path in music. She recalled beginning her rap career at the age of 14, stepping away from music for nearly a decade, and eventually returning to the stage through sheer determination. She spoke candidly about entering a hip-hop scene where female rappers were rare, remembering everything from changing clothes in restrooms due to the lack of women's dressing rooms to hearing dismissive comments when appearing at festivals.

“Now there are so many more women in hip-hop, and more women thriving across the music industry as a whole,” she said. “That makes me really happy.”

The message naturally led into “Revenge,” a song built around the idea that it's never too late to reclaim your future. She followed it with “TSUBASA feat. Yomi Jah,” welcoming her daughter Yomi Jah onto the stage for a moving performance that blended family, heritage, and love.

For the final song of the night, Awich chose “A Woman Hung Up” from her RZA-produced album Okinawan Woman. Written entirely in English, the track reflects on her journey from Okinawa to the United States and the experiences that shaped her into the artist she is today. Delivering the song with conviction and gratitude, Awich closed the event with a simple message to the audience:

“I love you.”

With that, Women In Music - EQUAL STAGE came to an unforgettable close.
