international music awards event, was held on June 13th at SGC HALL ARIAKE in Tokyo.

Music Awards Japan is an awards ceremony organized by the Culture and Entertainment Industries Promotion Association (CEIPA), which was established through the collaboration of five major organizations in Japan’s music industry: the Recording Industry Association of Japan, the Japan Association of Music Enterprises, the Federation of Music Producers Japan, the Music Publishers Association of Japan, and the Association of Concert Promoters Japan. Guided by the ethos, “Connecting with the world and illuminating the future of music,” the inaugural awards event was held in May 2025.

For MAJ 2026, the awards expanded significantly from the previous year, featuring a total of 78 categories. Winners of awards and other honored artists were selected through voting by approximately 5,000 music industry professionals, including artists and creators whose works had been entered for consideration. During the Premiere Ceremony, held on the afternoon of June 13th, the winners of 64 out of the 78 categories were announced, and recipients were presented with “THE RUBY” trophy.

Kasumi Mori and Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra member Atsushi Yanaka hosted the event. A live band led by music producer Akimitsu Homma served as the house band, performing bridge arrangements that connected memorable phrases from iconic Japanese songs across genres and generations, including Yoshiyuki Osawa’s, “Soshite Boku Wa Tohou Ni Kureru,” RADWIMPS’ “Yūshinron,” and THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT’s “Sekai no Owari.”

Among the winners, Kenshi Yonezu’s “IRIS OUT” received the Best J-Pop Song Award, Creepy Nuts’ “doppelgänger” won the Best Hip-Hop/Rap Song Award, and Fujii Kaze’s “Prema” earned the Best R&B/Contemporary Song Award. The Best Instrumental Song Award went to Kan Sano’s “Kamisama no Melody.”

Accepting the award, Sano spoke about the song — which was originally released around 15 years ago and newly recorded for the film Solitary Gourmet — saying, “I would like to thank the staff of Solitary Gourmet, director Yukata Matsushige and the god of music.”

Following that, ORANGE RANGE’s “Ikenai Taiyo” won the Best Revival Song Award. Reflecting on the achievement, the group said, “This song was originally released in 2007, so we’re truly delighted to receive an award like this 19 years later. Holding this ruby trophy now, the people who come to mind are our staff. Rather than saying we ‘carry’ their hopes on our shoulders, we want to continue moving forward by bridging everyone together as one.”

The Premiere Ceremony for MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026 (MAJ), Japan’s largest

In recent years, anime has become an indispensable force in the global expansion of J-Pop. This year, numerous songs achieved widespread success through their connection to anime, and the Best Anime Song Award was presented to long-running rock band sakanaction for “Kaiju”, written as the opening theme for the series Orb: On the Movements of the Earth. 

The song marked the band’s first-ever anime theme and sakanaction’s vocalist and guitarist Ichiro Yamaguchi said, “We were given this opportunity thanks to strong support from the author Uoto and many members of the production staff, and we are honored to have received this award. Thank you very much.”

Meanwhile, Kenshi Yonezu’s “IRIS OUT,” written for the animated feature film Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc, also made a significant impact at the awards. The song was recognized as the Best Japanese Song across four regions — Asia, Europe, North America and Latin America, cementing its status as aninternational hit.

Later, Producer r-906, whose song “Saji no Majinai” won the Best Vocaloid Culture Song Award, expressed gratitude to friends and family before adding, “Above all, I would like to thank everyone who continues to create and share works using Vocaloid. Let’s all keep doing our best,” offering words of encouragement to fellow creators in the community.

Today’s music scene is increasingly diverse — not only in genre, but also in the ways music is distributed and packaged.. Among a field of nominees that included King Gnu, ONE OK ROCK, RADWIMPS, and Spitz, sakanaction was named Best Rock Band / Solo Artist.

Accepting the award, Yamaguchi said, “We don’t necessarily think of ourselves as a rock band, so it means a great deal to be recognized in this category. After a period of recovery and hiatus, receiving this award gives us confidence moving forward.”

Radio stations across Japan presented the Special Award: Radio Radio Rising Artist of the Year, an award created to honor a domestic artist expected to break through to singer-songwriter Rol3ert. He shared his excitement, saying, “I’ve always aimed to reach a global audience from the very beginning, so receiving such a wonderful award means a lot to me.”

The ceremony also honored international artists in addition to domestic acts. Awards recognizing songs acclaimed by major music awards in their respective countries were presented to artists including Indonesian singer-songwriter Baskara Putra (known for his solo project Hindia), Filipino rock band Cup of Joe and Vietnamese singer Hòa Minzy. Several recipients expressed their gratitude while incorporating Japanese into their acceptance speeches.

Adding to the international atmosphere, Cup of Joe performed during the ceremony, bringing their anthemic hit “Multo” to the Tokyo audience. The segment underscored one of MAJ’s defining characteristics: its commitment to spotlighting not only Japanese music but also outstanding music from around the world.

This year, MAJ introduced several new awards designed to recognize the creators and staff members supporting artists from behind the scenes. The ceremony dedicated a special segment to honoring the professionals whose contributions are essential to the entertainment industry. While many recipients spoke candidly about the challenges involved in their work, they unanimously emphasized that the awards were not individual achievements, but honors earned by entire teams.

Another category newly established this year was the Best Original Score Award, recognizing excellence in screen music across film, television drama and animation. The inaugural winners were Marihiko Hara for the film Kokuho, Kensuke Ushio for NHK’s morning drama The Ghost Writer's Wife  and Kamasi Washington, Bonobo, and Floating Points for the anime LAZARUS.

One of the biggest success stories at this year's awards was idol group M!LK. After breaking into the spotlight last year with the hit song “Suki Sugite Metsu!” and building momentum with more hits alongside appearances on TV music and variety programs, the group won four awards during the Premiere Ceremony alone.

Accepting the Best Viral Song Award, the members reflected on their journey “This is our 12th year as a group, and honestly, we still don’t know what the ‘correct’ answer is when it comes to music or self-expression. But for the past 12 years, we’ve simply wanted to make our fans happy. That’s the only answer we’ve found. Receiving this award, the first people we want to tell are our fans. Thank you very much.”

When accepting the Family Song Special Award, the group drew laughter from the audience with a playful pun on the song title, joking that they were “so happy they might perish.”

M!LK Awards

The Special Award: Oshi-Katsu Request Artist of the Year powered by USEN, presented to the artist receiving overwhelming support through USEN’s fan-request service, went to Sakurazaka46. Representing the group, vice-captain Ten Yamasaki reflected on their journey, “Japan is filled with wonderful idol groups today, and we have constantly asked ourselves what it is that only Sakurazaka46 can do.” She continued,“I never imagined we would be able to see a view like this. This is truly thanks to our Buddies [the name for fans of Sakurazaka46]. We will continue working as hard as we can to meet—and exceed—everyone’s expectations.”

The ceremony also featured live performances. Jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara, who performed during the event, won Best Jazz Album for her 2025 release OUT THERE. Accepting the award, she said, “I want to continue cherishing every concert and every album, while appreciating the privilege of being able to dedicate my life to music.”

She also expressed her hope of continuing to promote jazz alongside the other musicians nominated in the category.

Meanwhile, Marihiko Hara, who won Best Soundtrack Album for the original soundtrack to Kokuho, reflected on the creative freedom he enjoyed during the project and voiced his hope for a peaceful society in which everyone can pursue artistic expression without restriction.

Hitsujibungaku won Best Alternative Artist for the second consecutive year. Vocalist and guitarist Moeka Shiotsuka reflected on a year filled with new challenges, saying: “I’m grateful to my bandmates and staff who supported all of our ideas and whims. I also want to sincerely thank the fans who continue to support and recognize our work.”

After announcing the winners across 64 categories, the Premiere Ceremony concluded with a performance by THE SPELLBOUND, featuring Masayuki Nakano of BOOM BOOM SATELLITES and Yusuke Kobayashi of The Novembers. The band performed “KICK IT OUT,” the official anthem of MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026, bringing the ceremony to a powerful close with their dynamic and energetic rock sound.
