As Tokyo counted down to the MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026 ceremony, Zepp Shinjuku (Tokyo) became the site of a one-night-only meeting between two of Japan’s most dynamic bands. On June 9, Kroi and Chevon came together for MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN WEEK SPECIAL LIVE: Kroi × Chevon, a special co-headline concert held as part of **MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN WEEK.

From June 5 to 13, the lead-up to Japan’s largest international music awards brought a wide range of live performances and special events to venues across Tokyo, with the Odaiba and Aomi areas at its center. Among them, the Kroi and Chevon show stood out as a high-energy prelude to the main ceremony on June 13.

Chevon Celebrates Fifth Anniversary with a High-Octane Set

Opening the evening was Tokyo four-piece Seventh Vega, whose self-described "city rock" sound paired polished musicianship with a retro sheen, easing the crowd into the night with grooves reminiscent of what one would hear in the 1980s.

If Seventh Vega provided the warm-up, Chevon wasted no time turning up the temperature.

Fresh off their major-label debut in April and already eyeing upcoming arena and Budokan headline shows, the Sapporo trio played with the confidence of a band fully aware of its momentum. "Meimei" immediately showcased the chemistry between bassist Tatsuya Ohno and guitarist Ktjm, while vocalist Mayu Yaginu commanded the stage on "Daikoshin," effortlessly shifting from soaring melodies to ferocious screams.

The performance carried extra significance, coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the band's formation. "Today's Chevon's birthday," Yaginu told the audience. "Let's make it count." The celebratory mood continued through "Banquet" and into the band's latest single, "Capretto," a reminder of just how quickly Chevon has evolved over the past five years.

Reading the room, Yaginu joked that the audience seemed to be saving some energy for Kroi. "Don't hold back," they urged. "Hit your limit with us first, then go beyond it."

The invitation worked. As the set progressed, the crowd only grew louder, with a run of spring-themed songs giving way to explosive instrumental exchanges between Ohno and Ktjm before "Juudenchu" sent the room into further frenzy.

Before ending, Yaginu reflected on the growing role of artificial intelligence, arguing that while technology may replace many kinds of work, music born from genuine human emotion never can. It was a fitting message for a performance built on raw intensity rather than perfection.

Chevon brought the set to a thunderous close with "FLASH BACK!!!!!!!!" and "Dance Decadence," leaving the audience fully fired up before handing the stage over to Kroi. 

Kroi Takes the Energy to Another Level

Known for seamlessly blending R&B, funk, soul, rock and hip-hop, five-piece band Kroi took the stage with the assurance of a group at the height of its powers. Fresh off the success of its first-ever arena tour earlier this year, the band immediately drew the audience into its signature groove through fluid musicianship and a strong sense of spontaneity.

As all five members settled into place, vocalist Leo Uchida greeted the crowd before easing into "Juden." The soulful performance soon opened into an extended instrumental showcase, with guitarist Yuki Hasebe, keyboardist Daiki Chiba, bassist Masanori Seki, drummer Hidetomo Masuda and even Uchida on timbales each taking a turn in the spotlight, earning roaring applause from the audience.

"Thank you for inviting us to be part of such a great event," Uchida said. "Let's make this a night everyone leaves feeling was unforgettable."

Without pause, Seki's bass line and Chiba's keys gradually gave shape to "Page," before "Monster Play" transformed the venue into a full-throated singalong, with fists raised throughout the crowd.

Picking up on the energy built by the night's earlier performances, Uchida laughed, "You're all fired up already. You must've seen some incredible sets before we came on." Kroi responded by leaning even further into its free-flowing interplay, with each member stepping forward at just the right moments while never losing sight of the band's collective groove.

For the finale, Kroi launched into "Fire Brain." Uchida encouraged the audience to experience it however they wanted: "If you want to dance, dance your heart out. If you want to listen, really listen. Just make sure you leave with no regrets."

The band followed its own advice. Stretching the song with dynamic improvisation and relentless intensity, Kroi pushed the performance to its peak before leaving the stage to sustained cheers from the crowd.
