Day 1 Highlights from MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2025: Creepy Nuts Win Big at the Historic First Ceremony
The MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN (MAJ) is the country’s largest international music awards event, created through an unprecedented collaboration between the five major organizations in Japan’s music industry under the organization CEIPA (Culture and Entertainment Industry Promotion Association). The inaugural awards ceremony took place on May 21 and 22 at ROHM Theatre Kyoto. This article reports on the Premiere Ceremony held on the first day.

Launched with the mission of “connecting with the world and shining a light on the future of music,” MAJ announced nominees across 62 categories on April 17. Winners were then selected through a voting process involving nominated artists, creators, and other members of the music industry. The Premiere Ceremony revealed the results for 40 of those categories.
Mrs. GREEN APPLE Takes Home Best Japanese Song Artist
The ceremony began with a dynamic live performance of “KICK IT OUT” by THE SPELLBOUND, a rock duo comprising Masayuki Nakano (Programming, Bass) from BOOM BOOM SATELLITES and Yusuke Kobayashi (Vocals, Guitar) from The Novembers. The duo’s powerful sound cut through the formal, tension-filled atmosphere of the venue, setting the tone for the inaugural MAJ awards with an explosive opening. Originally a BOOM BOOM SATELLITES track, “KICK IT OUT” was featured in MAJ’s teaser video — an appearance that inspired this special live performance.

The Premiere Ceremony was hosted by Hiroe Igeta, Kasumi Mori and Atsushi Yanaka from Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. Providing live background music was the Ruby House Band, a special group formed exclusively for this event, led by music producer and bandmaster Akimitsu Honma. Backed by this impressive ensemble, the winners were announced one by one, each receiving a trophy dubbed “the Ruby.” The first award presented was the Best Japanese Song Artist, which went to Mrs. GREEN APPLE. Having rapidly climbed to the top of the J-POP scene with numerous hit songs, the band took the stage to accept the honor. Vocalist and guitarist Motoki Omori said, “We’re truly grateful to receive this award at such a new and exciting award. We love making music, so we hope to continue creating songs that we enjoy and that resonate with our listeners.”

Following that, King Gnu won Best J-Rock Artist, while ATARASHII GAKKO! took home the Best Japanese Dance Pop Artist award. ATARASHII GAKKO! walked on stage wearing red sailor uniforms matching MAJ’s official color. Member SUZUKA said, “Dancing is a fundamental form of communication — a way to convey emotions and subtle nuances that words cannot express, through our voices and feelings. We hope to keep fostering a sense of connection with our fans and audiences worldwide through dance, bringing more moments of joy to everyone.”

Hikaru Utada took home the Best Japanese R&B/Contemporary Artist award, Hitsujibungaku received Best Japanese Alternative Artist, and Fujii Kaze was honored as Best Japanese Singer-Songwriter. Moeka Shiotsuka (Vocals, Guitar) of Hitsujibungaku, appearing on stage, shared her happiness, said, “I’ve always focused on creating music from within, so knowing that people are listening really motivates me. I hope to keep writing many more great songs in the future.”
