Japan's biggest night in music returned for its second year - bigger, bolder, and more global than ever. With spectacular performances and emotional acceptance speeches, the Grand Ceremony of Music Awards Japan 2026 celebrated the artists who are shaping the future of Japanese music and its growing impact around the world. Held on June 13th at TOYOTA ARENA TOKYO, the ceremony brought together some of the biggest names in Japanese music and marked another milestone for Japan’s music industry. 

MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN was established by the Japan Culture and Entertainment Industry Promotion Association (CEIPA), an organization jointly founded by five major music industry associations in Japan: the Recording Industry Association of Japan, the Japan Association of Music Enterprises, the Federation of Music Producers Japan, the Music Publishers Association of Japan, and the All Japan Concert & Live Entertainment Promoters Conference. Following its inaugural ceremony in May 2025 under the theme, "Connecting the world, illuminating the future of music," the awards returned in 2026 on an even larger scale.

This year's edition expanded to include 78 awards. Winners were selected through voting by approximately 5,000 music professionals, including artists and creators whose works were entered for consideration. Earlier in the day, the Premiere Ceremony presented numerous awards, while the evening's Grand Ceremony revealed the winners in 13 major categories, including Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Best Global Hit from Japan, and Best Asian Song.

Grand Ceremony – Part 1

With the expanded number of categories came an even grander production. TOYOTA ARENA TOKYO welcomed a variety of distinguished artists and music industry professionals.

The ceremony began with the epic opening film featuring Fujii Kaze and Creepy Nuts. In a seamless blend of fiction and reality, the film's female protagonist suddenly appeared at the back of the venue and walked to a cassette player placed at center stage, cueing the music in real life. The cinematic transition stunned the audience before sakanaction emerged on a moving stage platform from the rear of the arena to perform their 2025 hit "Kaiju."

The performance immediately drew thunderous cheers and demonstrated the world-class production values that have become synonymous with MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN. Following last year's acclaimed "RYDEEN REBOOT" opening, this year's ceremony once again delivered a powerful statement about the quality and creativity of Japanese music.

The first award presented was Album of the Year, introduced by actress Takako Matsu, who spoke about the comfort and strength music has given her throughout life before announcing Fujii Kaze's third album, "Prema," as the winner.

Accepting the award, Fujii explained that the Sanskrit title represents concepts such as "selfless love" and "spiritual love," saying, "I thank God, the God within everyone who worked on this album, and the God within everyone who has loved this album. That's what this album is about."

The ceremony continued with live performances from Japan's leading artists. HANA captivated the audience with "NON STOP" and "ROSE," accompanied by a special string arrangement and a dramatic shower of flower petals across the center stage.

Next came the presentation of Best Global Hit from Japan, recognizing Japanese songs that achieved international success. Cultural Affairs Agency Commissioner Shunichi Tokura and Toyota Motor Corporation Chairman Akio Toyoda announced XG's "HYPNOTIZE" as the winner, which was released as the lead single from XG's first full-length album "THE CORE.

The Best Girls Idol Culture Artist award went to FRUITS ZIPPER, with presenter Tao Okamoto announcing the winners. Speaking on behalf of the group, Mana Manaka expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in their journey before sharing a message for their fans, "We love all of our Furuppa (FRUITS ZIPPER fans). Thank you so much!"

Following a spectacular pre-recorded performance by Kenshi Yonezu, filmed outside TOYOTA ARENA TOKYO, guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei presented HANA with the Best New Artist award.

Accepting the honor, member CHIKA thanked producer Chanmina, the group's staff, and fans, adding, "Since our debut, we've always wanted our music to become a reason for someone to keep living."

The evening continued with elegant performances from MISAMO before Erika Toda presented Best Rock Song to Sakanaction's "Kaiju."

Frontman Ichiro Yamaguchi, Sakanaction's guitarist and songwriter, reflected on the band's long journey through Japanese rock and proudly lifted THE RUBY trophy, exclaiming, "We did it!"

As the first half of the ceremony drew to a close, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, joined by guest vocalists LiSA, TAKUMA (10-FEET), and AiNA THE END, delivered an explosive collaborative performance that brought Part One to an exhilarating finish.

Grand Ceremony – Part 2

After an intermission, Mrs. GREEN APPLE opened the second half with a spectacular performance of "Kusushiki," the opening theme for The Apothecary Diaries Season 2. Linked visually with footage filmed at Heian Shrine in Kyoto, the performance featured dancers, flames, and showers of confetti.

Best Music Video, a category that was created to emphasize how music videos have evolved from promotional tools into artistic partners to the songs themselves, was presented by acclaimed director Hitoshi Ohne. He announced sakanaction's "Kaiju" as the winner.

Music video director Yusuke Tanaka accepted the award alongside the band, thanking the entire production team while expressing his hope that greater recognition continues to be given to music video creators across Japan.

The Best Boys Idol Culture Artist award followed, with dancer and actor Aoi Yamada announcing M!LK as the winners. Representative Jutaro Yamanaka described being an idol as "a wonderful profession capable of making so many people smile."

Alternative rock band Hitsujibungaku then performed the powerful "Dogs," setting the stage for the announcement of Best Asian Song.

Presented by legendary producer J.Y. Park, the award went to HUNTR/X's "Golden," the breakout hit featured in Netflix's animated film KPop Demon Hunters.

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of the MAJ Timeless Echo award, honoring artists whose careers have made a lasting contribution to Japanese music. Following Eikichi Yazawa in 2025, this year's recipient was Tatsuro Yamashita, whose decades of uncompromising artistry have made him a global icon of city pop. In a recorded message, Yamashita thanked fans and promised to continue creating music and performing live at his own pace.

International flavor was added when Sam Smith became the first overseas artist ever to perform at MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN. Making the Japanese live debut of "My Guy," Smith's emotional vocals captivated the audience before warmly interacting with Japanese artists afterward. This unforgettable moment highlighted the awards' growing international significance.

Later, legendary dancer Min Tanaka presented Best Alternative Song to Hitsujibungaku's "Koe." Vocalist Moeka Shiotsuka reflected on the band's journey, describing alternative music as a space between admiration for existing traditions and a desire to challenge them.

The ceremony then celebrated Japan's unique idol culture with performances from FRUITS ZIPPER, who offered a softer arrangement of "Watashino Ichiban Kawaiitokoro," followed by M!LK's energetic rendition of "Sukisugite METSU!"

With only two awards remaining, actor Masahiro Motoki presented Song of the Year, once again honoring sakanaction's "Kaiju."

In one of the night's most emotional speeches, Ichiro Yamaguchi revealed, "sakanaction suspended activities three years ago because I was diagnosed with depression. 'Kaiju' was the first song I wrote after returning. To have it recognized like this gives me the courage to keep moving forward."

The victory capped a historic evening for sakanaction, who claimed eight awards, including Song of the Year, Best Music Video, Best Rock Song, Best Anime Song, Best Rock Band/Solo Artist, Best Lighting Production Staff in association with Japan Live Entertainment Stage TechStaff Association, Best Sound Production Staff in association with Japan Live Entertainment Stage TechStaff Association, and Best Cover Artwork in association with JAGDA.

After Fujii Kaze delivered a breathtaking performance of "Prema," actor Ken Watanabe took the stage to announce the evening's final honor: Artist of the Year.

The award went to Mrs. GREEN APPLE, making them Artist of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Frontman Motoki Ohmori reflected on the band's broad creative activities beyond music before sharing, "I formed Mrs. GREEN APPLE when I was 16, and even now I continue writing songs in quiet solitude. I'm truly grateful that those efforts have been rewarded."
