MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2025 officially announced the nominees for this year’s ceremony on April 17 at a special event held at Google’s Tokyo office.

MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN (MAJ) is Japan’s largest international music award, launched by the Culture and Entertainment Industry Promotion Association (CEIPA) — an initiative formed through the collaboration of five major music organizations across different sectors. As a symbol of CEIPA’s mission to break down industry barriers, MAJ has quickly become a focal point for both fans and professionals in the music world.The announcement event served as a lead-up to the official awards ceremony, set to take place on May 21 and 22 at ROHM Theatre Kyoto.

Championing Transparency, Creativity, Celebration, and Global Vision

The nominee announcement event showcased six major categories: Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Top Global Hit From Japan, and Best Asian Song. A total of 256 songs were submitted for Song of the Year, 167 artists for Artist of the Year, 171 albums for Album of the Year, 61 artists for New Artist of the Year, 100 songs for Top Global Hit From Japan, and 24 songs for Best Asian Song. From these, five nominees were selected in each category.

At the event, the nominees for all categories were revealed, followed by a panel discussion that looked back on the 2024 music scene through the lens of the nominated works. The panel featured guests such as comedian Kazutoyo  Koyabu, TV personality Asuka Kijima, and music writers Ko Matsushima and Tomonori Shiba. The discussion was lively, offering diverse perspectives spanning across genres and generations.

The event kicked off with a speech from Tatsuya Nomura, Chairman of the MAJ Executive Committee, who introduced the four key values of the awards: Transparency, Globalization, Recognition, and Creativity. He passionately stated, “We want this to be a fair award that shapes the future of music and resonates globally,” before officially starting the announcement.

When it came to Song of the Year, Shiba shared his thoughts: "These five songs are all top-tier — each one could easily take the win. They're not just hits; they’re filled with innovation. Whether you're a music professional or an artist, you'll appreciate the creativity, the powerful melodies, and the overall strength of these tracks."

Matsushima said, "I think everyone would be happy with any of the nominees," before focusing on Mrs. GREEN APPLE, who were nominated in all three major categories: Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year. He highlighted their impressive success from a numbers standpoint: "If you look at any streaming service's rankings, you'll see that more than half of the top tracks are by Mrs. GREEN APPLE. In fact, their streaming numbers are staggering — over four billion plays in Japan alone. That's double the numbers of the second-place artist."

When discussing Album of the Year, Shiba noted, "With the rise of streaming, people are listening to individual songs rather than albums as a whole. So, it’s now normal for artists to release singles." However, he pointed out that "on the flip side, how artists present their albums as a complete work, showcasing creativity and artistic vision, has become a way for them to express their identity." He praised the five nominated albums, noting Vaundy’s replica for its strong emphasis on album design by making it a double album and Kenshi Yonezu’s LOST CORNER for its careful arrangement and storytelling.

For New Artist of the Year, Koyabu commented, "Even someone like me — an older guy — can’t help but hear about these artists everywhere." Shiba said, "A major trend is the rise of artists from TikTok. At just 16, tuki. has gained recognition for her songs. And because she keeps her face hidden, it’s a fascinating example of generational change." Matsushima added, "It’s particularly interesting that Omoinotake is the only artist from a major label. This shows how the way music is delivered is really shifting."

In the Best Asian Song category, songs from Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand were nominated, with two entries from South Korea. Kijima, a K-pop fan, expressed her excitement about aespa’s "Supernova," saying, "The song is so catchy, and the visual impact is unforgettable." Shiba reflected on how the idea of "Western music" in Japan has evolved: "In the past, when we talked about 'Western music' in Japan, it mostly referred to U.S. and UK music, with a certain admiration for foreign music scenes." He continued, "Now, artists in Japan and Southeast Asia are blending local cultural influences with the history of American and British pop music in their own way." He wrapped up by saying, "Even if you’re not familiar with the artists, as a listener, you can still feel that ‘this is something special’ about their music."

The nominees in this category were selected from the top 100 tracks based on global streaming data, excluding play counts within Japan. This award essentially celebrates "Japanese songs that are popular overseas." The selections highlight three key elements often credited with bringing Japanese music to global attention: "games," "anime," and "city pop."

Matsushima highlighted "It's Going Down Now," a track from the Persona 3 original soundtrack, saying, "While this song may not be well-known in Japan yet, it has received an impressive number of plays worldwide. It’s already surpassed 100 million streams, with over 90% of those plays coming from outside Japan." He also pointed out, "Since Billboard began publishing charts tracking 'Japanese songs played overseas' last year, these tracks have become more visible and are reaching us in new ways."

Koyabu added, "Thanks to platforms like TikTok and YouTube, it’s much easier for people all over the world to discover Japanese music, which is a real stroke of luck." Reflecting on the lineup, he said, "Seeing artists like Mikiko Matsubara being rediscovered globally makes me realize that Japanese music hasn’t just become amazing recently — it’s always been exceptional. Honestly, I haven’t done anything myself, but I can’t help but feel a little proud."

Awards Gaining Guests' Attention

At the end of the event, the speakers shared the categories that stood out to them. Shiba mentioned the Best Japanese Alternative Artist Award and touched on the concept of "alternative" in J-POP, which has often been undefined. He said, "The nominees are artists whose music is appreciated by those with a discerning ear, the kind of music that may not be widely known but is highly respected." He found it striking that the award recognizes "music that deserves attention," regardless of commercial success.

Shiba also discussed the Best Idol Award, noting, "There haven't been many instances where idols have been treated as a serious category in Japanese awards." He continued, "The fact that popular idols like Snow Man and Nogizaka46 are being nominated and acknowledged is a refreshing change. What’s even more groundbreaking is that this recognition is coming not only from fans and listeners but also from industry professionals and fellow artists."
