MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN (MAJ) is the country’s largest international music awards event, created through an unprecedented collaboration between the five major organizations in Japan’s music industry under the organization CEIPA (Culture and Entertainment Industry Promotion Association). The inaugural awards ceremony took place on May 21 and 22 at ROHM Theatre Kyoto. This article reports on the Grand Ceremony held on the second day.

MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN (MAJ) was launched this year with the mission of “connecting with the world and shining a light on the future of music.” Created in collaboration with the global music industry, MAJ aims to shape the future of music through international exchange and recognition. In its landmark first edition, MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2025 honored diverse music cultures across 62 categories. From a pool of over 3,000 entries submitted by artists and music professionals, the top works and artists were selected through an industry-wide vote.

The first day’s Premiere Ceremony saw the announcement of winners in 40 categories, setting an exciting tone for the event. Momentum carried into the Grand Ceremony, where the spotlight turned to major categories including Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Top Global Hit From Japan and Best Song Asia.

 

“RYDEEN REBOOT” Delivers a Grand Opening Moment

Playing out amongst the temples and shrines of the ancient capital Kyoto, the second day of the ceremony drew a remarkable turnout, with around 150 media representatives in attendance and hundreds more gathered outside to scream for their favorite artists as they walked the red carpet. The excitement extended far beyond the venue, thanks to live TV and radio broadcasts and global streaming via YouTube, turning ROHM Theatre Kyoto into a global stage.

As the Grand Ceremony began, the spotlight shone on none other than Haruomi Hosono, one of Japan’s most iconic musical visionaries and a member of the pioneering group Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), who delivered a stirring opening speech that set a memorable tone for the night.

“There are two people who couldn’t be here with us today due to circumstances, Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto. It’s their extraordinary talent that has made it possible for me to stand here now. When it comes to YMO, we never saw ourselves as part of the mainstream. Instead, we poured our passion and love into the music, dedicating ourselves to crafting sounds that were truly captivating. We took in influences from around the globe, absorbed and transformed them, and sought to create a style uniquely Japanese. Through that, we were able to give something meaningful back to the world.”

Chosen as the “SYMBOL OF MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2025,” Yellow Magic Orchestra stands as a trailblazing force that shattered the walls of “going global” in Japan’s music scene decades ago. Few artists embody the spirit of this award quite like them — they were pioneers who, over 40 years ago, truly realized the vision of “connecting with the world and shining a light on the future of music.” After Hosono’s heartfelt speech, the screen on stage erupted with the breathtaking opening spectacle “RYDEEN REBOOT,” inspired by their legendary track “Rydeen.” This vibrant showcase brought together an extraordinary lineup of artists: Perfume, Yoshinori Sunahara, STUTS, CHANMINA, Number_i, Vaundy, Hatsune Miku, Hayato Sumino, Yuki Chiba, Takashi Hosokawa, Ichiro Yamaguchi (Sakanaction), FRUITS ZIPPER, CUTIE STREET, 10-FEET, Atarashii Gakko!, YUKI and Yasuyuki Okamura. It was a seamless celebration of Japanese music history featuring dozens of artists, paying homage to pioneering band Yellow Magic Orchestra.

Prominent Figures Lead the Award Announcements

The Grand Ceremony opened with great fanfare, hosted by actor and singer Masaki Suda. Prior to the event, over 30 notable artists, including Suda, graced the red carpet outside the theater, setting an energetic and festive tone. Inside the venue, a stellar audience of distinguished guests filled the seats. Amid an excited atmosphere, the announcements of the winning artists and works began.

A well-known celebrity presented a trophy dubbed “the Ruby” to the winners in every category. For Album of the Year, honoring exceptional creativity and artistry, actor Yutaka Matsushige stepped on stage to reveal that Fujii Kaze’s sophomore album, LOVE ALL SERVE ALL, had taken home the prize. Fujii, celebrated for his boundary-crossing musical style and swift rise to global acclaim, accepted the award amid rapturous applause. With a hint of surprise, he shared, “I remember making this album with so much love. I hope everyone will continue to share the love they hold within their hearts, in whatever form, with the world.”

For the announcement of Best Idol Artist/Group award, legendary idol Kyoko Koizumi took the stage as presenter and aid, “Years ago, when work was overwhelming and I felt close to breaking, I looked up the word ‘idol’ in the dictionary. It was defined as ‘a figure of worship.’ That moment made me realize that an idol’s true essence, their very presence and shine, is its own unique genre. To light up people’s hearts simply by existing takes incredible dedication and effort. I believe those struggles will one day become your most treasured memories. Keep shining brightly on stage.” She then revealed the winner: the immensely popular idol group Snow Man.

Although Snow Man couldn’t attend the ceremony, their Ruby would reach them later. This approach, celebrating artists regardless of their presence, reflects MAJ’s unwavering commitment to a fair and transparent voting process, underscoring the award’s authentic dedication to honoring true merit.

For the Top Global Hit From Japan award, Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs Shunichi Tokura announced YOASOBI’s "Idol" as the winner. The track set multiple J-Pop records, including 21 consecutive weeks at the top spot on the Billboard JAPAN Hot 100 chart and number-one rankings on numerous international charts. Vocalist ikura, appearing with composer Ayase, shared her excitement: “‘Idol’ was inspired by the story Oshi no Ko. YOASOBI’s signature style of turning narratives into music makes this award especially meaningful to us. We aim to keep delivering playful, thrilling experiences to our fans as YOASOBI.”

New Artist of the Year, presented by professional figure skater Mao Asada, went to singer-songwriter tuki., a high school sophomore. Keeping her identity under wraps, she gained huge popularity on TikTok and streaming platforms, making her a standout choice as the defining “New Artist of the Year” of the moment.

“MIDTIME” Showcases a Range of Category Winners

The first portion of the Grand Ceremony came to a close, followed by the transition to “MIDTIME,” hosted by Hama Okamoto (OKAMOTO'S) and Miki Sumiyoshi. This part showcased awards decided through public listener votes in partnership with various music industry companies, alongside categories voted on by members of MAJ-affiliated organizations. MAJ’s philosophy is to honor artists and creators from every angle, engaging both industry insiders and fans alike. Furthermore, fostering the entry of international artists into the Japanese market remains a vital mission of the awards, with multiple artists visiting Japan to coincide with the presentation of special categories celebrating music from across Asia.

"Bling-Bang-Bang-Born" Dominates MAJ Awards

The second part of the Grand Ceremony marked the peak of MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2025, with veteran lyricist Takashi Matsumoto, former drummer of Japanese rock pioneers Happy End and one of the nation’s most accomplished lyricists, taking the stage to present Song of the Year. Currently living in Kyoto, Matsumoto has penned countless songs over his 55-year career. He offered inspiring words to the young talents gathered: “Writing lyrics and composing music is the process of creating something out of nothing. Though the journey has been long and challenging, looking back, it’s been a truly rewarding experience. To everyone here today, may this award not be your finish line, but a new beginning.”

Following his heartfelt message, Creepy Nuts’ “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” was revealed as the winner for Song of the Year. The track gained global viral fame on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, boosted by the catchy “BBBB Dance” featured in the anime Mashle: Magic and Muscles Already sweeping seven awards at the Premiere Ceremony, this song continued to captivate audiences at MAJ. Reflecting on their success, rapper R-Shitei shared, “It’s a privilege that a track born from our pure passion and minimalistic ideas has earned such recognition.”

Additionally, Creepy Nuts was honored with the Best Japanese Hip-Hop/Rap Song award, presented by famed copywriter Shigesato Itoi, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience. This moment marked a clear acknowledgment of the duo’s impactful contributions to Japan’s hip-hop scene. Between th: Bling-Bang-Bang-Born / Creepy Nutsese two awards, Best Song Asia, recognizing hits from across Asia, was announced by author Mieko Kawakami, with aespa’s “Supernova” taking home the prestigious honor. This dynamic dance track, which gained worldwide recognition in 2024, stood out powerfully at MAJ as well.

Electrifying Live Performances by Artists

The Grand Ceremony was as much a showcase for electrifying live performances as it was an awards presentation. YOASOBI took the stage first with “PLAYERS,” a track created for PlayStation’s 30th Anniversary project, “Project: MEMORY CARD.” What seemed like a pre-recorded performance surprised the audience when the stage revealed itself to be housing a video game-inspired set, with Ayase and ikura appearing live amid the bedroom-themed stage.

Creepy Nuts ignited the crowd with a passionate performance of their anthem “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born,” while Chanmina delivered an astonishing four-song set, featuring “Harenchi,” “KING,” “Bijin,” and “WORK HARD.” Her high-energy show included daring aerial moves and running on a treadmill, leaving the audience awe-struck and cheering.

Utada Hikaru appeared via pre-recorded footage from beneath ROHM Theatre Kyoto, captivating viewers with a smooth and rhythmic performance of “Electricity,” from their 2024 best-of album “SCIENCE FICTION.”

Eikichi Yazawa, honored with the MAJ TIMELESS ECHO award for his enduring influence on the Japanese music scene, delivered an invigorating live performance at the event. Introduced by football veteran Kazuyoshi Miura, who like Yazawa continues to thrive in his career, he energized the crowd with unforgettable rock classics such as “Tomaranai Ha~Ha” and the heartfelt ballad “YES MY LOVE.” Reflecting on his 50th anniversary as a solo artist, Yazawa encouraged the younger generation of musicians with a sincere message: “Keep pushing forward. Aim to reach 50 years.”

At the start of the second segment, Fujii Kaze delivered a moving live piano performance of “Michi Teyu Ku (Overflowing).” The balladslyrics explore themes of life and mortality, softly filling the venue with heartfelt emotion through his warm and expressive voice. After Kiko Mizuhara gave a powerful speech highlighting how these iconic songs — performed by strong, empowering women — have inspired pride and supported many women beyond herself, AI, Awich, NENE, and MaRI took the stage in succession. Their rap cypher “Bad Bitch Bigaku Remix” showcased unstoppable female energy that captivated the audience.

As the ceremony neared its conclusion, Mrs. GREEN APPLE stepped onto the stage. Accompanied by a grand orchestra, they delivered a powerful performance of “Darling,” with soaring vocals and dynamic sound that filled the venue, all while confetti fluttered through the air.

The Grand Reveal: Artist of the Year

Following Mrs. GREEN APPLE’s spellbinding performance, the venue was charged with anticipation as the ceremony reached its climax: the announcement of Artist of the Year. This prestigious honor, voted on by 5,000 music industry professionals involved in MAJ, celebrates the artist who has earned the highest acclaim. Actor Koji Yakusho took the stage as presenter and remarked, “The recipient of this award bears the important responsibility of carrying the spirit of music into the future.” He then revealed Mrs. GREEN APPLE as the winner — an act that had already deeply moved the audience with their live set. With 24 songs surpassing 100 million streams on major platforms, they are undeniably one of the leading forces in the 2020s J-POP scene. Motoki Omori (Vocals, Guitar), representing the group, reflected on their 10th anniversary, smiling warmly as he said, “Thanks to the incredible support from so many people, especially my fellow band members, and above all my passion for songwriting, we’ve managed to keep going strong.”

At the venue, the award-winning artists faced the media for interviews, beginning with YOASOBI. Ayase described MAJ as “an inspiring goal for young musicians just starting their journey. We hope to work hard and earn such recognition ourselves someday.” ikura recalled being introduced as “artists representing Japan” before their performance and expressed a strong resolve: “We want to become artists that make the people of Japan proud.”

R-Shitei from Creepy Nuts expressed his gratitude, saying, “I’m really glad this category for Best Japanese Hip-Hop/Rap Artist exists.” DJ Matsunaga chimed in, “We never imagined being part of something like an award ceremony.” R-Shitei went on to reflect on hip-hop culture, stating, “Hip-hop, as we see it, is a culture that stands independent of awards. While it’s an honor to receive this recognition, there’s an immense pool of talent beyond the spotlight. I hope this moment helps shine a light on that wider culture.”

Omori from Mrs. GREEN APPLE reflected on MAJ, saying, “When I create music, I don’t see boundaries between Japan or the rest of the world. My hope is that the music reaches as many people as possible, even just one more listener. Above all, I want to remain honest with myself in my music-making. So having more platforms like this to set goals and serve as inspiration is really motivating.” He went on with heartfelt sincerity, “Making music is often a lonely journey. It begins alone in my workspace, then I share my work with the other two members, and it gradually expands and connects. Today, I deeply felt the power of music, and every kind word and warm look from our fans truly lifts us up. I’m genuinely grateful to be able to show my appreciation in a place like this.”

Designed to be Japan’s answer to the Grammy Awards, MAJ began on an unprecedented scale nationwide. When the awards ceremony day arrived, the spectacular event and the announcement of winners drew significant attention from music lovers and the media, marking a hugely successful debut. As Omori pointed out, if this award becomes a cherished dream and goal for artists, it will undoubtedly drive further growth and evolution in Japan’s music industry.
