Artists from across Asia gathered in Tokyo on June 11 for MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN WEEK SPECIAL LIVE – Shibuya Sound Scramble 2026, a showcase held as part of the official program surrounding MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026, Japan's largest international music awards.

Guided by the awards' vision of "Connecting with the world, illuminating the future of music," the event transformed three Shibuya venues—duo MUSIC EXCHANGE, Spotify O-WEST, and Spotify O-nest—into a celebration of Asia's diverse and fast-evolving music scene, where artists from different generations and genres shared the stage.

Following the performance, we caught up with Cup of Joe, the Filipino pop/alternative band nominated for Best Song Asia at MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026 and recipient of the Philippine Popular Music Special Award. Ahead of their performance on the SONG BRIDGE Stage at duo MUSIC EXCHANGE, the band spoke with us about their music, creative journey, and the growing global recognition of Filipino artists.

— Congratulations on your nomination for MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN. What was your first reaction when you heard the news?

Cup of Joe: Thank you. When we first heard, we were genuinely surprised and incredibly happy. It was a huge honor for us. Reaching this level has been one of our dreams for many years, so being recognized by the Japanese music industry means a great deal to us. It's been incredibly encouraging.

— What does being part of MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN mean to you and to the Filipino music scene?

Cup of Joe: We feel a huge sense of responsibility. It's not just about bringing our band's name to an international audience — we also feel that we're representing the Filipino music scene as a whole.

Being here in Japan and meeting so many different artists from across Asia has been incredibly inspiring and motivating. This experience has made us want to learn more about the Japanese music industry, and we're really excited about the possibility of more opportunities in the future.

— What do you wish music fans around the world knew about the Philippine music scene?

Cup of Joe: The first thing I'd want people to know is how authentic OPM (Original Pilipino Music) really is. Whether it's the songwriting, the performances, or the way artists express themselves, Filipino music has a character that's uniquely its own. I hope more people around the world get the chance to experience that originality for themselves.

— How would you like to see Asian music continue to grow in the years ahead?

Cup of Joe: I hope music continues to transcend borders and languages. Of course we'd love for more people in the Philippines to hear our music, but we also want to connect with listeners in Japan and across Asia. And eventually, we'd love to share our sound with people all over the world — including audiences in the United States, the United Kingdom, and beyond.

— How are you feeling about tonight's show?

Cup of Joe: This will be our second time performing in Japan, so we're really excited. We hope even more people here will discover our music and experience the craftsmanship that goes into what we do. We can't wait to get on stage.

— What would you say is the biggest difference between audiences in the Philippines and Japan?

Cup of Joe: They're quite different. When we played in Japan for the first time last March, the audience was incredibly warm and supportive. Even if they didn't understand every word of the lyrics, we could tell they were enjoying the music itself. Seeing people clap along, smile, and move to the songs made us really happy.

In the Philippines, fans are extremely active in showing their support through social media. In Japan, what stood out was how directly we could feel that love and encouragement in the room. There was such a warmth to the audience, and I think that's why we felt an immediate connection with everyone here.

— Do you have a message for everyone in the audience tonight?

Cup of Joe: We still have so much more music and so many more performances that we want to share with you. We hope you'll continue supporting us. We love you all!
