The MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN (MAJ) is set to become the country’s largest international music awards event, created through an unprecedented collaboration between the five major organizations in Japan’s music industry under the newly formed organization CEIPA (Culture and Entertainment Industry Promotion Association). The inaugural awards ceremony will take place on May 21 and 22 at ROHM Theatre Kyoto.
The buzz is already building after the recent reveal of the 2025 MAJ nominees. As anticipation grows, OTOMO, MAJ’s official media, is spotlighting standout contenders in the top categories — Best Song, Best Artist and Best Album. Leading the pack is Mrs. GREEN APPLE, a trio appearing in all three.. In this article, we take a closer look at the band defining a generation.

When Mrs. GREEN APPLE kicked off their “Phase 2” era with the release of “New My Normal” in the spring of 2022 — following a hiatus and the departure of two members — it marked more than just a comeback; it was the beginning of a creative explosion. In the years that followed, they released a string of hits including “Dance Hall,” “Que Sera Sera,” and “Lilac,” quickly establishing themselves at the forefront of the J-Pop scene. The band’s rise has been so meteoric, it’s no exaggeration to say we’ve entered the “Mrs.” era of Japanese pop.

Their breakthrough work in this new chapter came via the 2023 album ANTENNA, released that July. It’s a tour de force capturing both the band’s pop sensibility and artistic depth. From the deeply introspective ballad “Soranji,” to the uplifting “Que Sera Sera,” to the rollicking rock of “Magic,” and a self-cover of their track from ONE PIECE FILM RED, “I’m Invincible,” ANTENNA showcases a fully realized sound. The album stands as a musical landmark for the band,brimming with color, lyrical insight, and masterful production that cemented its identity upon release.

Among their many hits, one song has come to define the band’s place in the 2020s: “Lilac.” As the opening theme for the anime Oblivion Battery, it bursts open with intricate guitar work and an explosive, live feel. While Mrs. GREEN APPLE often explores orchestral grandeur and genre fusion, “Lilac” brings them back to the raw power of rock, reaffirming its roots. The lyric “The world’s full of unanswered questions / That’s exactly why we choose to love” lingers in listeners’ minds — and with over 500 million streams, the track has grown into a generational anthem.

Their momentum continues to build. Their latest single “Kusushiki,” the opening theme for the second season of The Apothecary Diaries , has topped the Oricon Weekly Streaming Chart for three weeks in a row since April 9. And in July, they’re set to celebrate their 10th anniversary with a massive outdoor concert at Yamashita Pier — expected to draw 100,000 fans over two days. Mrs. GREEN APPLE’s nomination for Best Artist at MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2025 isn’t just fitting, but a necessary nod to the era of J-pop the group preside over.
