Formed in 2019, YOASOBI made an explosive debut with their first single, “Yoru ni Kakeru (Racing Into The Night),” which quickly became a breakout hit and has since surpassed 1.1 billion streams according to the Billboard JAPAN charts. The group has continued to dominate the scene with one hit after another, consistently setting new benchmarks in Japanese music.
Dubbed “a duo that turns novels into music,” YOASOBI is driven by a unique concept. Composer Ayase transforms fiction into finely crafted pop songs, infusing each track with both narrative depth and musical brilliance. Meanwhile, vocalist ikura (also known as solo artist Lilas Ikuta) brings these tracks to life with her crystal-clear voice. Although Ayase often writes intricate melodies originally intended to be delivered by the synthesized voices generated by Vocaloid software, ikura navigates this technical difficulty with ease, thanks to her powerful vocal control.
Nominated for both Song of the Year and Top Global Hit From Japan at the MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN, their smash hit “Idol” was written as the opening theme for the anime Oshi no Ko. The song captures the story of Ai Hoshino — the anime’s “perfect, ultimate idol” — through a whirlwind of shifting melodies and sharp lyrical storytelling. The track achieved unprecedented success, hitting number one on Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. chart. A viral TikTok dance challenge further fueled its popularity, culminating in a showstopping performance at the 2023 NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, where idols from across labels and borders — including Nogizaka46, MISAMO, SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, LE SSERAFIM, NewJeans, JO1, and BE:FIRST — united for a once-in-a-lifetime happening.
YOASOBI went on their first Asia tour in 2023, followed by a solo U.S. concert in 2024. That same year, they signed with leading U.S. talent agency Creative Artists Agency and were invited to perform at major global festivals like Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2024 and Lollapalooza 2024. To celebrate their fifth anniversary, they also held their first solo dome concerts in Tokyo and Osaka in fall 2024. With an ever-expanding global presence, YOASOBI continues to lead the charge as one of Japan’s most influential and visionary acts — a force that will undoubtedly shape the future of entertainment both at home and abroad.
